Australian business SunEdison sold to US manufacturing giant

The Australian business of SunEdison has been sold to US-based manufacturing company Flextronics, continuing that company’s growing interest in the solar and battery storage space.Flextronics, which already manufacturers solar modules for SunEdison and is also manufacturing battery storage devices for Australian company Redflow, will pay $US8.7 million  ($A11.6 million) for the SunEdison assets, according to documents filed with the US bankruptcy court.

The assets include the Australian business and the “multi-channel” and residential solar businesses in the US and other countries. The SunEdison businesses have been up for sale since the parent company was put into chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in April after failing to manage a period of rapid expansion that made it at one stage the biggest renewable energy developer in the world.

Flextronics – a company with $US26 billion in annual sales – has been manufacturing modules for SunEdison for six years, and last year agreed to set up a new manufacturing plant in Mexico, primarily aimed for US residential, utility and commercial solar PV projects. It has also picked up a bargain in the Australian business, at least compared to the price paid by SunEdison for its foothold in Australia. In 2014, it paid a total of $A18.4 million, including $A3.1 million in cash and “contingent consideration” valued at $A14.0 million, for Energy Matters.

There is speculation that the business will return to the Energy Matter brand. The business employs about 70 people in Australia and ranks in the top 10 installers of rooftop solar in the country. The assets do not include the Bulli Creek solar project, which will be sold separately. The purchase, which is subject to court approval, continues a recent trend where major internationals buy outright, or significant stakes in, Australian solar installer and solar wholesalers.

The world’s biggest poly-silicon company, GCL Poly, recently bought a WA business 1Stop Warehouse, while Chinese company SPI bough Solar Warehouse for $25 million.

Microsoft to open its flagship store in Sydney

Microsoft has announced the grand opening dates for its first flagship store in Sydney — the first outside of North America. Spanning across two levels of Westfield Sydney at Pitt Street Mall, the store will open on Thursday November 12, following the launch of its New York store on Fifth Avenue.

Similar to Apple’s “Genius Bar”, the Microsoft store will have an “Answer Desk” where customers can learn how to use the latest and most popular products. Another cool feature of the store will be an interactive space where customers can engage with and test the products.

To help, Microsoft has employed people from more than 11 countries, who speak more than 21 languages.

This will be much more than a store, said Pip Marlow, managing director of Microsoft Australia. It will embody the world class innovation that you have come to expect from Microsoft and be a space where consumers — from teens who love gaming to parents who want to ensure their families are safe online, to small business owners looking for guidance – can visit and learn how to make the most of their technology, so they can make the most of every moment.

On the opening day Microsoft will donate more than $5 million in software and technology grants to select local organisations in Sydney and New York.

In line with this community participation, Marlow says the store will regularly donate volunteer hours, host community events, offer training workshops and support STEM education.

Following the opening of its two newest stores, Microsoft is holding an event on October 6 entitled: “We have some exciting news to share about Windows 10 devices.”

Manufacturing Sector in Australia

Manufacturing has changed the world and is itself changing, more fundamentally than at any time since the industrial revolution. Despite of impediments the manufacturing sector of Australia is still an important pillar of its economy and infinite opportunities for growth and diversification, particularly in global value chains.

It is predicted that by the end of 2018, manufacturing employment will fall by another 40,000, with the end of car assembly. But, that many jobs that are integral to manufacturing are classified as services. These jobs include engineering, design, marketing and other professional and technical services. Rather than thinking of manufacturing as being in decline, it is more accurately depicted as part of a value chain where value creation is outsourced or acquired elsewhere.

There are more than 80,000 manufacturing businesses in Australia, mostly under 100 employees, with the larger ones accounting for more than a quarter of the economy’s total R&D expenditure. Even after that a sharp decline in manufacturing investment from a peak of $14.4 billion in 2005/06 to $8.8 billion in 2013/14 has occurred. This is the lowest level in 12 years, as profit margins fall behind other sectors, at a time when global opportunities are at their greatest.

Around the world, large vertically integrated manufacturing operations are being superseded by smaller, interdependent production units which supply specialised products and services, often intermingled, to global markets and value chains. Sometimes they are outsourced components of the larger operation, but mostly they are clusters or networks of small and medium enterprises (SMEs) that have become known as “micromultinationals”. These globalised SMEs are characterized by relentless innovation, which includes but goes beyond technology development and adaptation. They also pursue non-technological innovations.

In Germany, this new approach to manufacturing and its integration with services is called “Industry 4.0”. It is driven by a well-funded “innovation ecosystem” of large and small firms, universities, Fraunhofer Institutes and government, supported by strong workforce and management capability and informed by sophisticated “technology foresights” which mark out areas of future as well as established competitive advantage.
Other countries are also adopting this approach, most recently the UK which has invested heavily in its “Catapult Centres”, as well as the Netherlands with its “top sectors” strategy and the US with a network of National Manufacturing Institutes. Australia has exemplars in its small number of high performing manufacturing micromultinationals, but a lot to learn about building a competitive knowledge-based economy.
